This is not a fabric-based quilt! These are acrylic painted canvases that have been cut and assembled like a quilt.
My quilted acrylic artwork features the universal symbol for Welcome: the pineapple.
Pineapples are an important part of the Charleston, South Carolina landscape and culture and my work with pineapples has been inspired by over 15 years of trips to Charleston area.
The center is a brilliant orange canvas. This pineapple is painted in yellows, then quilted. The top is painted in greens and the leaves have been pattern quilted. Each segment of the pineapple is highlighted with sierra dots.
Red imprints and red fabric with metallic highlights have been fused around the pineapple.
The pineapple is surrounded by a double border of both yellow and then orange. Orange and red fabric has been fused throughout the borders with orange and yellow strokes and object imprints.
The piece was assembled and quilted using black thread. The quilting extends around each of the painted lines, objects and fabric. The quilting adds a nice puffy unique texture to the overall artwork.
The edge is finished using a variegated orange and yellow thread that brings the entire piece together.
It is mounted on a custom frame that was built specifically for this piece. It can be hung with the saw tooth hanged on the reverse side.
